ATWS #11: Fil Campbell

Fil CampbellFil Campbell is a singer and songwriter from the border village of Belleek in Northern Ireland. Fil was visiting Lancaster to head line a Wood Stove House concert in late September 2010 while on a two-week US tour. Fil’s latest CD Songbirds, released in 2005, is a complement to a six-part television series by the same name that celebrates the lives and songs of five women from different parts of Ireland who sang songs that everyone knew in the early to mid-twentieth century. They became internationally famous and paved the way for many traditional Irish singers who followed. The TV series had a successful run on RTE, Ireland’s channel One.
Joining me for the interview is Tom Knapp, the Lancaster-area Irish fiddler, and my friend and partner in the traditional Celtic duo, Fire in the Glen. Tom and I chatted with Fil about her life in music, the process of making the Songbirds project, and her time on the road as a touring musician. Check out Tom’s article about Fil at Rambles.net.
