Podcast #88: Talkin' House Concerts with Josh Gibbel, Live From the Cellar

Live From the Cellar StageJosh and Kelly Gibbel have created something really special with a house concert series that they host in the basement of their Lancaster City home. It’s called Live From the Cellar and every 3 or 4 weeks, Josh and Kelly welcome the community to catch an intimate acoustic performance with two acts, some local, some regional, and some national, along with a special one-night showing of a local visual artist’s work. The setting is laid back with plenty of opportunity to make new friends, talk to the artists, and experience the arts with no distractions.
Live From the Cellar is one of several house concert series happening on a regular basis here in Lancaster. Chestnut House Concerts recently welcomed The Stray Birds to a show that sold out in a couple days, and they will be welcoming the April Verch Band, a national touring artist on Tuesday, January 15. At the Wood Stove House, we’ve been hosting concerts with national and regional acts since early 2009.

Local Lancaster musician and songwriter Mike McMonagle also chimed in on house concerts from a musician’s perspective. You can hear a full interview with Mike on Around the Wood Stove episode #28.

Great segment, Jason! This past weekend was my first time seeing a show at Josh’s house (Denison Witmer and Levi Schlosser) and I was blown away. Such an intimate, downright charming experience! Thanks for having me in to share my thoughts on the topic, too!

Yeah, the Cellar’s a great place to see shows. Glad you made it to the show this weekend. I regretted missing it, but the fact that there’s way too much cool stuff going on in Lancaster is an awesome problem to have! I appreciate your contribution, as always.

I had no idea this existed in Lancaster and look forward to checking out some of these shows in the future – live music recharges my batteries!

Thanks for chiming in, Emily! Our mission is to bring more of these types of cool “under the radar” creative projects in Lancaster to light. Stay tuned!
I’m going to update the post with links to a couple other recent articles about house concerts.

The Denison Witmer concert was a lot of fun. This is the second time The Community Haus (www.thecommunityhaus.com) brought him into Lancaster. The first time was last January, partnering with the Community Room on Prince. This time, we were really excited to work with Josh and Live From the Cellar. Josh has become our Landlord and a great friend and I hope we can do more of this ‘art and music basement setting’ more together.

By the way, I really want to express how much we as Lancaster Countians appreciate your coverage on the ‘fresh expressions’ within Lancity. Josh did a great interview and I feel like really expressed some great thoughts.

Thank you very much for these kind words, Jeff! Yeah, I think Josh and Kelly have really done some great things for local music in Lancaster. And they prove that it doesn’t take a huge business plan or large sums of cash.

I agree. I know it to be true and their work helps prove it. When I suggested to him about partnering with us to bring DW to Lancaster again, right away he said he could host it, I was really excited to call DW – because of how proven the cellar is. I knew together it would be a great setting. Keep it up Josh!
