Ok, so I’m not a big fan of musicals, and I know next to nothing about pop music. But I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to finally catch a PRiMAperformance at the Ware Center in downtown Lancaster on Sunday, August 5. PRiMA Theatre Co. has been on my radar for a while and the timing was perfect to catch
PRiMA’s Glee Live show on a tip from Dan Deal himself, who suggested that my pre-teen daughters would “love it”. Man, did he hit that one out of the park! They both gave it a score of 11.
We landed great seats for the show, which was a non-stop, pop music extravaganza busting at the seams with outstanding song and dance performances by over 30 cast members. I’ll admit that I didn’t know all of the songs, especially the more current hits, but the ones I did know were masterfully woven into the story line.
My highlights? A somber, heartfelt version of Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, sung by the male half of the Glee Club show choir after an onstage break-up scene, and the a capella opening to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ that ended the show with the full cast. But my favorite part of the show by far was Total Eclipse of the Heart (incidentally my favorite middle school dance song) performed by Dan Deal and Sarah Timm, who played the principal and choir director respectively. I laughed so hard, I literally cried. And I’m not afraid to admit that.
Kudos to PRiMA and the entire cast and crew from PRiMA’s Glee Live. There are some really exciting new events coming to Lancaster this fall from PRiMA. We’ll keep you posted and hopefully learn more about them from the horse’s mouth.
